Dr. Joseph R. Cave

Dr. Joseph Cave grew up in San Diego, California and graduated from St. Augustine High School. He continued his studies at San Diego State University where he graduated with a B.S. in Biology in 1976. This led him to the University of California, San Fransisco where he received a B.S. in Dental Science and a Doctorate in Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) in 1980. With his extensive training in general dentistry, he returned to San Diego and established a private practice.

During his tenure in private practice from 1980 to 1987, he maintained an active role with the San Diego Dental Society. In addition, he served as the staff dentist at Hillside Hospital in San Diego as well as Mercy Hospital Dental Clinic. In 1987, Dr. Cave and his family moved to Massachusetts to begin his residency in the specialty of Endodontics at Boston University. In 1989 he completed his Masters Thesis and received a certificate in advanced graduate studies in Endodontics.

Dr. Cave came back to the West coast where he practiced in Westwood, Los Angeles. During that time, he was on the faculty of the Endodontic Department at the University of California, Los Angeles. He taught the dental students on the clinic floor.

In 1990, Dr. Cave returned to San Diego to join Dr. Eugene Hanson in his endodontic practice. Subsequently, Dr. Anthony Potente joined the practice in 1998 which is now known as C&P (Cave & Potente).

Dr. Cave is a member of the San Diego County Dental Society, the California Dental Association, the American Dental Association and the American Association of Endodontists. He is on the Dental Society's Ethics Committee and has served as Chairman. He has served on the St. Augustine High School Board of Directors from 2002 to 2012. Dr Cave and his wife, Rachel, have raised three boys. He enjoys playing golf, fishing, cooking and is active in collecting sport cards and memorabilia.


Dr. Anthony P. Potente

Dr. Anthony Potente was born and raised in San Diego, California. He began his undergraduate education at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) where he completed his B.A. in Microbiology in 1985 and his M.S. in Biology in 1986. While at UCSD, he received the University of California President's Undergraduate Fellowship for independent research on enzyme kinetics. Following completion of his M.S. degree, Dr. Potente conducted research at the Scripps Research Institute on blood proteins.

At the conclusion of Dr. Potente's clinical research, he attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where he obtained his D.D.S. in 1992. In addition to his extensive training at UCLA, he was presented with the American College of Dentists Award for exceptional contribution and service to the dental profession and public. Dr. Potente came back to San Diego where he completed a General Practice Residency at the Veteran Administration Hospital in La Jolla, California in 1993. During his residency, he had advanced training in comprehensive patient care, including that of medically-compromised patients.

After practicing general dentistry for three years in San Diego, he returned to UCLA for a residency in the specialty of Endodontics. During this time, he was awarded the American Association of Endodontists Foundation Research Award for independent studies on chemokine biology. Dr. Potente received a certificate in advanced graduate studies in Endodontics in 1998; and he continues to be affiliated with the UCLA School of Dentistry as part-time faculty in the Endodontic Department. He teaches both dental students and residents in the laboratory course as well as on the clinic floor. In addition, he is an instructor for the laboratory section of the Endodontic Continuum Course offered by UCLA's Continuing Education Department.

In 1998, Dr. Potente returned to San Diego to join Dr. Joseph Cave in establishing the endodontic practice known as C&P (Cave & Potente).

Dr. Potente has presented research projects and published articles in various scientific journals. He is an active member of the San Diego County Dental Society, the California Dental Association, the American Dental Association and the American Association of Endodontics. Dr. Potente and his wife, Joyce, have two children.
